Your new role
This is a senior role. As the Coordinator - Strategic Planning you will work with the Manager Integrated Strategy to facilitate the implementation of Council’s strategic planning goals relating to Nillumbik’s activity centres, residential areas, green wedge areas, and key sites. You will manage a team of 5 planners who will work under your guidance on a variety of land use and urban renewal projects. You will be the authoritative source for the Council on all strategic planning and as such are expected to be highly experienced and focussed on obtaining the best outcomes for the community.

This role will also involve

  • Preparing a clear vision and strategy for sustainable land use, investment and development across the Shire of Nillumbik.
  • Building partnerships with the community, levels of government and other key stakeholders to realise the Shire’s strategic land use goals and strategies, and quality urban design outcomes.
  • Integrating planning and seeking innovative solutions to achieve Council’s key strategic planning and urban design objectives, including planning, implementing and managing projects that help realise the potential of Nillumbik’s activity centres and rural areas
  • Advocating for and delivering environmental sustainability outcomes through land use and the built and natural environment.
  • Engaging and listening to our community to ensure Council strategy, policies and services reflect and respond to local expectations, values and needs, underpinned by transparent decision-making.
  • Achieving positive outcomes through influence and negotiation.
  • Establishing joint partnerships and creating mutual trust and respect with our community, landowners and partners.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Qualifications related to urban development, town planning or equivalent.
  • Extensive and varied experience in planning, policy and strategy in a local government context, preferably in environmentally sensitive and urban fringe areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff and consultants, and to foster a culture of excellence, innovation and customer-oriented service delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrated planning and project management.
  • Demonstrated achievements in community engagement and liaisons/negotiation with industry and government agencies.
  • Demonstrated record of effective interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to represent the views, policies and practices of Council in a constructive and responsible manner, and to support Council initiatives.
  • Ability to advocate and explain environment and planning controls and regulations and the effect of their application with the general public, other organisations and tribunals/panels.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Victorian planning system, particularly the statutory planning framework, relevant legislation and local government planning practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to confidently
